After watching Ken Robinsons lecture in class today, I have come up with the following:
I believe good teaching involves
encouragement to be creative. Ken Robinson expressed that people are often
scared of being wrong. We have started to believe that mistakes are the worst
things we can make. We are born creative, but then grow out of it. If teachers
can encourage true passion and creativity amongst their students, I think we
would see more young people eager to pursue higher education. I do believe that
core subjects such as Math and English are still important, but if the student
is not excelled in those areas, it should not reflect too significantly on the
student. We are all unique. We all have different passions. We are all smart in
our OWN WAY. Schools tend to try to shape kids to the standards in which they
want them. I think this approach is harsh and in most cases, ineffective. I would like to see schools push kids to
pursue something that they are truly passionate about, and see how that student
would more than likely succeed. I believe good teaching is the ability to acknowledge
students for who they are as individuals. If a teacher recognizes special
abilities within a student, they should be allowed to push them further with
this trait. I think public schools should have more individualized programs
for these student that would still give them school credit, but provide a
more enjoyable experience.
