Model Narratives

Reading Feross Aboukhadiejeh’s “How I Learned to Program Computers”, and Joshua J Romeros’ “How I Learned to Live Google Free” was helpful to me in many ways. I gained a broader understanding of what is involved in writing a personal narrative about a true passion. These two writings had a number of similarities. The authors explained in detail their personal reasons for learning the task, expressing the importance of dedication, and hard work.

Each narrative discussed the significance of what that task meant to the writer, as well as the hard work and dedication it took to accomplish their goals. From a young age, Feross Aboukhadiejeh had a deep desire to learn about web design. After he made his first website, he constantly researched how to improve his designs. Of course, he ran into a few struggles like unfamiliar computer programs. But with the help of many side projects and lots of time spent, he became more knowledgeable about the topic. Joshua Romeros felt it important to “quit” Google as he realized he had become dependent on its services. And essentially decided he wanted to see what it would take to cut all ties with the program. After experimenting, he learned that google has many strengths, but also many weaknesses. Like both of the authors, in my narrative I will clearly express the significance of my learning experience. I will explore all aspects such as the difficulties faced, and the times I shined. Finally, I will convey to the reader that with practice and dedication, you can learn anything.

The desire of wanting to “improve” was clearly expressed in both writings. As Aboukhadiejeh became more intrigued by web design, he bought books on how to make his sites more user friendly. By mastering the use of MySQL and PSP he was able to expand his online creations. Similarly, After coming to terms that google is not the best at everything, Romeros was able to find programs with features that lived up to those of his goolge favorites. He gained an understanding of what it takes to transfer files and data from his accounts. He also discovered the importance of not getting too attached to what one search engine has to offer. I can use these examples to help me explain how I went about improving my skills and expanding my knowledge.

Both narratives were enjoyable and interesting to read. The least I will take from them Is: Make sure to include clear details and reasoning, express passion and dedication, and don’t forget to keep your narrative personal and true.
